Mini Interview with Alex J Cavanaugh about Series Development

All over the webivesre this week Alex is answering questions about – well everything and anything! Each blog has a different question. It’s a fantastic idea for a blog tour and a great start for his latest book release.

minime1I know you didn’t start out with a series in mind, but now that you’ve done it, what steps would you have taken to choreograph the series had you known?

minialexI would’ve made an entire character arc for Byron. That would’ve helped me plan the next two books better. I also would’ve been thinking about the ending of the third book while writing the other two.

What’s really amazing is how it really did all come together despite my lack of planning!

minime1I think it’s ingenuous how you decided to develop the series. Congrats!

A storm gathers across the galaxy…

Commanding the Cassan base on Tgren, Byron thought he’d put the days of battle behind him. As a galaxy-wide war encroaches upon the desert planet, Byron’s ideal life is threatened and he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans.

After enemy ships attack the desert planet, Byron discovers another battle within his own family. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in his son, threatening to destroy the boy’s mind.

Meanwhile the ancient alien ship is transmitting a code that might signal the end of all life in the galaxy. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty years ago could return. As his world begins to crumble, Byron suspects a connection. The storm is about to break, and Byron is caught in the middle…

  1. Thank you, Holly! I really did get lucky that it came together so well.

  2. it still worked. (Although I’m glad planned all five of my books.) Congrats, Alex.

  3. I think I’d have trouble with a series if it wasn’t the plan. I admire that you were able to pull it off, Alex!

  4. Hi, Holly & Alex,

It does help to outline well so that in the event that a series is possible, it’ll be easier to orchestrate. Wishing Alex success with CassaStorm.

  5. Do you have any new books of your own in plan, Holly?

    1. Yes, but the last couple of days I been reading. Everyone is coming out with books and I’m all caught up in reading them! 🙂

  6. Wow, I thought a series would really be planned. So cool it worked out so well!

  7. Funny how things develop. In theory I suppose the Cassa series could keep going? Kind of like Star Trek did?

  10. Holly, great time over here. Love the mini interview idea. Your question was a good one. (I thought it said interview with mini Alex.) Haha.

    CONGRADS Alex!!! Woot woot!

    1. Well, I did make a mini-Alex for the interview!

  11. I don’t write series-type stories but I can imagine there’s fun in it. You get to explore different aspects of your characters over several books and put them in all kinds of situations.

  12. Great question, Southpaw! Loved reading Alex’s answer. So proud of him. He’s worked so hard!

  13. Hi, Holly, Hi, Alex,

IT is amazing that your first stand alone book turned into a series. It is always a smart thing to leave enough openings at the end just in case ….

    Congrats Alex, all the best!

  14. Hurray for Alex! Love seeing his interviews everywhere!

  15. Often movies come out as standalones and when the film enjoys a certain success, another one follows, and another, and another, with the follow-ups many times outshining the original. You’re following in a noble tradition, Alex. 🙂

    Well done and congratulations!

  16. It’s tough for us pantsers to work out a series ahead of time! But I’m learning myself on the job and yes, plotting ahead helps! LOL

    1. Ha! I guess that would be true.

  17. I’m so excited for Alex!
    Great interview, however brief. 🙂

  18. Congrats Alex. Guess you sort of “pantsed” the series. Worked out though! You finished the trilogy. :))

  19. Great Q & A. Congrats, Alex!

  20. Congratulations on 3 books Alex. good question Holly. It does help to have an idea of where you’re headed when you write. That is the source of writers block for me. So I take notes on all my stories.
    Nancy
