While perusing the local rose garden, I happened to see this unusual specimen. I almost missed it hidden among a myriad of larger, brighter roses. There were other roses with the same shape, even some with red stripes. Only this bush had roses that also had a peculiar yellow tint. It made me think of heroes in our stories. They may look like everyone else, but there is something so slight that makes them special and makes them stand out – even if not at first.

What unusual things have you noticed lately?

Oh, very pretty. I visited my local rose paradise recently too. Took loads of photos. I love roses.

Unusual things I’ve noticed… Hmmm. There was a young crow outside our house yesterday. Had been there since evening before, couldn’t fly yet. Didn’t look all too happy. We gave him water and lots of food, protected him from the many cats around here. In the evening we let him go and he hopped off in the direction of a calling big crow (obviously mommy or daddy). : )

Good eye! Yeah, it’s the subtle things that make a difference in the hero.

Isn’t there a saying that “God is in the details”? It’s worthwhile for us to pay attention.

Very nice observation. And awesome rose, with the yellow, white and red together like that.

I just found out the identity of an orange and black furry ant. It’s called a cow-killer. And it’s really a wingless wasp. Nature never ceases to amaze me.

That’s a beautiful flower. I’ve noticed that people tend to slow way down when making a right turn, to the point that it takes them forever to get through an intersection while I’m waiting to turn left.

I’ve been noticing people’s ears for the past few weeks. They are all really different. Not sure what this new ear interest means.

I love it. Lately I’ve been stopping and smelling all the literal roses I can. It really cheers me up. Today I noticed a wood pecker. That’s cool.

I’ve been passing by photos in the hallway of my local university and staring at the photographs of famous physicists. I can’t stop wondering what their stories were like.

    Wow, what a beautiful rose.
It’s good to keep an eye out for those unusal things, those special things that can add not only to our stories, but to our lives as well.
    (Loved the analogy).

And I like your comparison. Sometimes the difference is so subtle, even the writer might not realize it for awhile. For example, I just found that unique coloration in my protag now that I’m entering the climax of my first draft. It was an AHA moment, when I finally discovered his true self.

I hope to explore it more in Draft 2.

I’ve been paying attention to the bees this year and have found some unusual ones. They’re bigger than the honey bees and have darker coloring. They seem to mingle with the honey bees without disturbing them. There’s quite a hum around the flowers everyday.

I love it when people pay attention to the details in nature. Great post.

Hi Holly .. I keep noticing new things or looking at things in a different light .. I look at the wild flowers that have sprung up – lots of white – I don’t seem to remember so much – ie expanse … usually in a few months yes .. seems early now.

Old roses are just gorgeous .. and this variegated one looks very beautiful ..

    Cheers Hilary
