Blogging Tips Given and Needed!

Tip of the day for Blogger bloggers

Turn on the mobile feature. It’s great for checking updates on your mobile device. Log in and go to Settings. Then click on Email & Mobile. Select “Yes.”

What this does is strip off the sidebar information and all the graphics on your mobile except for your header (if you use one) and image within your actually post. If you display your profile on your blog, it will show up at the bottom.

See it in action by visiting my blog on your mobile device. It loads quickly and legibly – no more squinting to read the text. You’ll notice I have no header on mine ‘cause I do the fancy schmancy image map.

♥ Now for my question

Many of you have books out there and I’d like to display them here in a widget. There is GoodReads, Shelfari, and LibraryThing. There might be others. I’d like to know what you recommend.

And in other news

I will be changing my blog URL this week. I’ve been reading up on how to do it without messing everyone up. When I’ve made the change, your following will not be affected. Feeds might be, but it looks like I can redirect old feeds to the new address until you update them on your side.

Direct linking will be the biggest problem. I will have a “stub” blog with the old URL. I’m trying to decide if I should copy the old content over there so people don’t have to update their links – IF there are any, which I’m not too sure there are. I plan to update on Wednesday.

Opinions?

  1. I have a question … When you change your blog url, does all this content already written here on this url transfer over, or does the new url blog just start from the first post you write there?

  2. Yes as above, same question. And where did you find info on how to do this? Curious minds want to know 🙂

  3. I have no answers and no questions because I don't know any of this. But I'll check to make sure I have email and mobile checked…I'm pretty sure I do. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to check Wednesday afternoon for your new link.

  4. I have a cheap track phone, that's about as mobile as I get. Though, if I cared more about my waistline, I'd probably try harder to be mobile, period.

  5. Actually, I'm reading your blog right now via phone and it doesn't work for me. Boo!!

I use Goodreads. It has worked for me so far and I enjoy it.

ooh, good luck on the url change. I've thought about doing it but I don't want to lose anyone. 🙁

  6. OOoo I can't wait to see how your transition goes! I tried that a few months ago, but I guess I didn't do it right because everyone thought I had closed my blog down until I changed it back =/ Hope yours goes more smoothly!

  7. Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep an eye out to be sure it loads into my sidebar properly. 🙂

  8. let me know how the url thing works out for you. It may be something i might do in the future

  9. I don't have one of those book shelf things either. I do have a smart phone, when my daughter gets home, I'll have her do what you suggest. She has it at the moment.

  10. I have Shelfari but nowhere on my blog to place it. Maybe I need to declutter a bit.

  11. Thanks for the mobile tip. Will give it a whirl!

  12. Good luck with your URL! I'll be sure to watch for it.

  13. I changed my URL last June, but now I that I think back, I think this was before I even added my followers widget, so I don't know how it would have been affected. Good luck — I hope everything goes smoothly!

  14. I'm lost with most of this. I barely understand the basics! I absolutely don't understand codes. I'm still trying to figure out how to really use Goodreads and Facebook not just to keep in contact with family and friends, but also to use as a writer's tool–as all of us are with these social media. I just don't want to do anything right now to upset my precarious cart, and so now whenever I think about changing my template even, I don't. I just tinker with coloring or something simple. I need peace!!!

BTW, I think your blog is lovely. I love the header–the beautiful red flowers and black edging. Good luck with the URL!

  15. p.s. A while back, when I got a blogger glitch, I had to start over with a new URL. I saved my content and it transferred, but I had to start all over again with followers. It took TIME. It was a pain. I don't dare try anything!!

  16. Great tips! I didn't know about mobile and email settings. Good luck with your transition, I hope all goes smoothly 🙂

  17. ooh! awesome tips. Will try this. I personally love librarything (though I'm also a member of goodreads and shelfari). I joined the lifetime membership for $20 and was able to add all the books in my collection (i'm a bibliophile, hence i have hundreds). It's a great way to catalog the books i own. They even have a widget i can share on my blog.

  18. Love the look of your blog. Good luck with the change over. Hope it goes smoothly.

  19. Good luck with the change over. I'm sure it'll be okay. =D

  20. Good luck making your changes, and thanks for the tip!

  21. I don't use any, but my wife loves Good Reads I think. I really should read books.

  22. Joanne and Jules, yes all the content will be there since I'm not really moving my stuff. Once I'm done, I'll recreate this URL for people who created links. I posted on the help forms and http://blogging.nitecruzr.net/ answers. There are a whole bunch of articles there about the ins and outs of blogger.

  23. Hannah, boo on that! Blogger needs to work out some features I guess. If you get a chance, can you post that information on the help forum?

I'm not supposed to lose anyone. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'll let you know how it goes.

  24. Ann, I remember when that happened. I'm glad you like the header. Thanks.

    Hi!
THanks for dropping by my blog and for joining the contest–and for putting the contest link up on your sidebar. Much obliged! I hope the transition to your new blog address goes smoothly. I'll follow your blog wherever it is:P

… on my blog I have a slideshow of the books I've reviewed. You might could do something similar.
