I stumbled across this fungi colony on a recent walk. My guess is that there is a tree stump under all those shrooms, but I did not investigate to prove my theory. It was quite large about the size of soccer ball.

Have you ever seen a mass like this in the middle of a grassy area?

That's both awesome and slightly disturbing :P But I can't stop looking at it!

I've mowed several patches in my lawn, but none that large!

  3. I've had the occasional mushroom sprout in the lawn, but nothing like this. I'm guessing a tree stump is the culprit, too.

Yay for shrooms! I would agree with your assessment of tree stump.

Looks like a fried brain. Where's Dr. Frankenstein when you need him :)

Carol wrote what I thought! If I saw 1 of those things I'd step over it. I sure as heck wouldn't want to fry it in butter & olive oil like I do w/ mushrooms from the supermarket!

That is an amazing picture. I don't think Colorado is wet enough to support that size a fungus. I have seen mushrooms.NancyN. R. Williams, fantasy author

Hmm, that is certainly odd! Nope, never come accross anything like it!

I haven't! I like it! I'm not sure where my mushroom love stems from, but there it is. There was a really cool fallen log on my walk with the most gorgeous layers of bright orange layers… it looked like clams or muscles on a rock but SPECTACULAR, but by the time I remembered my camera, they had faded to nearly nothing…

  10. I can't say I've come across anything that big before. Looks like a flowered shower cap.

No, I've never seen something like that in the grass! It's fascinating to look at . . .

That is gross yet fascinating…I've never seen one that big! It looks like some undersea anemone or something.

Uh, no. At first, I thought it was mushrooms. Now, I haven't a clue.

  15. I think mushrooms and jellyfish are the weirdest things on Earth. :)

Ooo Hart, those sound beautiful. I think they maybe shelf mushrooms. I love mushrooms too, though I only eat the white button ones (sautéed in with butter, garlic, and white wine with some good bread to sop up the juices.)

Hilary Melton-Butcher said…Hi .. honey fungus spreads out from trees .. and is lethal to all around it .. they have incredibly long threads underground .. I'm not sure if this is honey fungus .. but my guess is – it is similar. It 'builds' in a circular arc ..& I think you can't get rid of it .. my uncle had it at his house!Beautiful picture as everyone says .. not edible though! Have a good week .. Hilary
